The most common cause of a sore and cracked tongue is vitamin deficiency. The lack of certain vitamins causes the tongue to create fissures. Other causes of a sore and cracked tongue can include geographic tongue, oral thrush, and tongue fissures. Tongue fissures are extremely common among people with Down’s syndrome. The treatment for tongue fissures or sore and cracked tongues includes brushing the tongue with a toothbrush to remove debris. Debris that is left in the fissures can cause infection.
